What is a “golden duck”?

IPL 2023 Winner

A golden duck in cricket refers to a batsman getting out on the very first ball they face without scoring any runs. It is one of the most disappointing dismissals for a player.

Types of Ducks in Cricket:

  • Golden Duck: Out on the first ball faced.

  • Silver Duck: Out on the second ball faced without scoring.

  • Bronze Duck: Out on the third ball faced without scoring.

  • Diamond Duck: Out without facing a ball — usually in a run-out scenario.

  • Royal Duck: Dismissed for a duck as the opening batsman on the first ball of the innings.

Why Is It Significant?

  • A golden duck is often embarrassing and can psychologically affect a batsman.

  • It can also give the bowling team a significant boost in confidence.

  • In crucial matches, a golden duck from a key player can influence the outcome of the game.

Though it is a part of the game, no batsman ever wants to experience a golden duck!
