What is an LBW (Leg Before Wicket) dismissal?

IPL 2023 Winner

🏏 LBW (Leg Before Wicket) is a mode of dismissal in cricket where the batsman is out if the ball strikes any part of their body (except the hand holding the bat) before hitting the bat and would have gone on to hit the stumps.

Key Criteria for LBW:

  1. Pitching: The ball must pitch in line with the stumps or outside off-stump (in some cases).

  2. Impact: The ball must hit the batsman's leg in line with the stumps or outside off-stump (if not playing a shot).

  3. Path to Stumps: The ball must be on a trajectory to hit the stumps.

  4. Playing a Shot: If the batsman is attempting a shot and is struck outside the line of off-stump, they cannot be given out.

Not Out Scenarios:

  • If the ball pitches outside leg-stump.

  • If the ball hits the bat before hitting the leg.

  • If the impact is outside off-stump while the batsman is playing a shot.

LBW is often reviewed using the Decision Review System (DRS) to ensure accuracy.
